Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Migration

Short description

The Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Migration (GSM) at Humboldt University of Berlin aims to highlight gender and sexuality research within the field of migration studies.

GSM’s main goals include expanding the research field by bringing the experiences of women* and LGBTQ migrants to the forefront and responding to the growing policy debates on forced migration, transnational mobilities, transactional sex, migrant masculinities and femininities, queer family migration, and more. In addition to these goals, GSM aims to integrate the core contributions of feminist and queer studies literature into migration studies by encouraging debates and academic contributions on intersectionality, queer of color critique, antinormativity, homonationalism, and homonormativity. By fostering research and dialogue that highlight the diverse experiences of migrants, GSM seeks to uncover the ways in which gender and sexuality, as reflected in power dynamics, cultural narratives, and policy frameworks, shape migration politics and society at large. We cooperate with national and international centres for gender and sexuality research, among which Gender and Sexuality in Migration Research (GenSeM) at the IMISCOE as well as Margharet von Bretano Center for Gender Studies at the FU-Berlin and Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at the HU-Berlin.
